Exploring The Impact Of Testosterone On Emotional Intelligence And Behavior

Testosterone can be delivered through injections, gel, or patches and will gradually yield physical, sexual, emotional, and reproductive changes. But it’s much more common in older men, because testosterone decreases with age; roughly half of men over age 80 have low levels of the hormone. Elevated testosterone has been linked to lower cognitive empathy, the ability to recognize what another person is thinking and feeling, in numerous studies. Scientifically establishing a direct link between testosterone levels and aggression has proved difficult. The sex hormone testosterone plays a more significant role in the life of a male, but it is present in both sexes to some degree. We thereby provide supportive preliminary evidence for hormonal and neural mechanisms underlying emotional intelligence in preadolescence.
It is known that fluid intelligence depends on cognitive processes that are mediated most prominently by frontal lobes (Duncan et al. 2000, Duncan 2005). This could also explain why lower testosterone is found in gifted boys, for the overall androgen signaling it might be sufficient (Celec et al. 2009b, Celec et al. 2013). According to this well-known theory, gifted children with exposure to higher testosterone in utero will also have non-standard hemispheric specialization and handedness but also higher risk of allergy. Geschwind-Behan-Galaburda theory of cerebral dominance (1987) argued that higher than normal concentrations of testosterone in utero may inhibit the development of the left hemisphere while enhancing other areas, such as the right hemisphere (Geschwind and Galaburda 1985). Without access to prenatal testosterone it can be speculated that being exposed to higher prenatal testosterone in utero may lead to a lower postnatal set-up of the hypothalamo-pituitary-gonadal axis.
Future studies can further investigate the involvement of hormone-mediated emotional processing during the development of emotional intelligence in children and adolescents, and latent state-trait modeling could be applied to model individual differences in salivary testosterone, cortisol, and their interaction in the future studies. Since gender differences are prevalent in long-term testosterone levels (Grotzinger et al., 2018), future studies should include women to compare testosterone concentrations and their effects on emotion processing between genders. Additionally, males show stronger right-lateralization in emotional-face processing tasks, suggesting sex differences in brain lateralization go beyond just language. To our best knowledge, this is the first study investigating the correlations among hormones (testosterone and cortisol), EI and neuronal activities during emotional conflict control processes in preadolescent children. The triple balance model of emotion (Van Honk and Schutter, 2006) hypothesized that the balance between the emotional brain and the cognitive brain would influence emotional processing at three levels which were linked to testosterone and cortisol. Future studies could further investigate testosterone-cortisol interaction and its relation with cognitive control of emotion as underlying mechanisms of emotional intelligence.

By paying attention to hormonal health, men can take a more complete, proactive approach to protecting their mental and emotional vitality.
